Jinshan Tanying (989～1060), Linji School Chan master in Song Dynasty. A native of Qiantang, Hangzhou (Zhejiang) with surname Qiu.He was known as Daguan Tanying. At the age of thirteen, he went to Longxing Temple to become a monk. At first courtesy he learned from master Dayang Jingxuan for Cao Dong Chan; later, he followed Guyin YunCong to be his Dhamar heir. He lives in Jinshan Longyou Temple in Runzhou (Jiangsu), and promoted the Linji style Chan. In the fifth year of Jiayou he died at age of 72.

Chan Master Jinshan Tanying was a native of Zhejiang, surnamed Qiu, and named Daguan, was converted to a monk at Longxing Temple at the age of thirteen. At the age of eighteen, he traveled to the capital and lived in the garden of the grand marshal Li Duanyuan. One day, the grand marshal asked him: "Excuse me, master, is the hell that people often talking about do exist or not? "

　

Chan Master Yunying replied: "When Buddhas taught dharmas, they always talked about emptiness and forms, for example when the sick eyes see flowers from void, they look like real thing but actually nothing. Marshal now try to find emptiness from existence, just like holding the river water with you hands, it is nothing in existence. It's ridiculous. If a person is sent to prison, why not he sees heaven in his mind? Fear and horror are in the heart, heaven and hell are all within a single thought, good and evil can be manifested, when you find your true mind, you won't be confused. "

　

Grand marshal: "How to find your true mind? "

　

Yunying: "Don't attach to good and evil. "

　

Marshal: "After not attaching to them, what should I attach to? "

　

Yunying: "Attach to nothing, just like the Diamond Sutra says: When your heart attach to nothing, you will find your true mind. "

　

Marshal: "Where do people go when they die? "

　

Yunying: "Without knowing birth, how can you know death? "

　

Marshal: "I’ve known that when I was born. "

　

Yunying: "Then where is you life coming from? "

　

While Marshal was contemplating, Chan Master Tan Ying patted his chest and said,'What are you just thinking about here? "

　

Marshal: "Well, I only know that I’m doing my jobs, and I don’t feel time passes by. "

　

Yunying: "A hundred years passed just like a dream. "

　

Marshal Li Duan had enlightened feeling at the moment.
