Guangyong (850～938), a Chan master of Five Dynasties. He was a native of Fengcheng, Jiangxi with a common surname Zhang. He learned Confucian classics at young age, he was able to explain the meaning of the classics at the age of thirteen. After he grew up, he travelled to Kaiyuan Temple and encountered a strange monk who taught him the Vimalakirti Sutra. At age of 19 he received ordaination from Chan Master Yangshan Huiji. Later he visited Linji, according to his instructions, he returned to Yangshan, and got enlightened from Yangshan. After Yangshan died, Guangyong ignited his fingers in return, and lived in the South Pagoda of Yangshan to promote Chan School. In the second year of Shengyuan, he died at the age of eighty-nine.

When Chan Master Nanta Guangyong first visited Chan Master Yangshan, Yangshan asked him: "What are you doing here? ’

　

Guangyong replied: ‘Come and see master."

　

Yangshan asked again: "Have you seen the master?"

　

Guangyong replied: "I saw him!"

　

Yangshan asked again: "Does the Master look like a donkey horse?"

　

Guangyong said: ‘I don’t think the Master looks like a Buddha! "

　

Yangshan continued asking: "Neither is like a Buddha, so what does it look like? ’

　

Guangyong replied unwillingly: ‘If there is a resemblance, how is it different from a donkey horse? "

　

Yangshan was greatly amazed, and said: "Both budhas and sentient beings are trancended and the true nature is revealed. In twenty years, no one is better than you. Take care. "

　

Afterwards, Master Yangshan praised Guangyong as soon as he saw someone:

　

"Guangyong is a flesh Buddha. "
